Jen turns on her best friend, Desna. Virginia plays with fire by leading Dean on. And Roller makes his big escape from Gladys wearing a zoot suit.
Claws Season 1 Episode 7, Escape, proves my suspicions at the end of Claws Season 1 Episode 6, Self-Portrait, correct: Jen and Desna don’t seem to be true best friends. Well, at least Jen doesn’t seem to be one to Desna. Virginia takes her flirting game with Dean a little too far by kissing him. All the while, Roller’s break-out mission ends up a success… or at least it seems.
In the last episode of Claws (season 1 episode 6), Jen flips faster than a robbery heist get-away-driver in an interrogation room. Desna tries to get situated in her new comfortable existence with regular people problems. Quiet Ann’s romance could get everyone caught and Roller’s new best friends is a shock collar.
On Claws Season 1 Episode 6, “Self Portrait,” Desna finally found a good man who treats her with respect and she can’t stop self-sabotaging because she’s used to chaos. Jen sings a new tune now that the drug money has touched her hands. Quiet Ann finally found a woman she wants to try to build a relationship with, but the woman is all kinds of problematic. Virginia finally finds her way into the crew. Roller gets treated like the scroungy dog he is, and lastly, Polly is still being… well, Polly.
Desna and the crew go up against a rival salon in notorious Florida nail competition. Although the promotional video doesn’t go into detail about why this competition is so important, it seems Desna’s dream future hinges on the results of the competition.
In Claws Season 1 Episode 6, “Self-Portrait,” Desna now has her full focus aimed at her nail empire. Although everything was peachy when Desna went to look at the new salon she would buy, it’s clear the camaraderie has shattered. Her realtor, Mandy gave her two options last episode: get the runner-up salon at discounted price or pay full price for her dream salon. So now, the Desna must win this nail competition in order to attain her dream in starting her own salon.
Desna and the crew finally get their salon right as Bryce and Uncle Daddy kill Desna’s evil foster parents, thinking they were Roller’s killers. Everything seems to be on the up and up for Desna, until we find out that Roller is still alive.
Claws Season 1 Episode 5, “Bats**t,” took us on a wild ride. With a little unexpected help from Virginia, Desna get the idea to frame her foster parents. However, a plan is just a plan without someone to finish the job. Thank God they had Polly come through with the clutch finish. Desna ended up with her first-choice salon, Uncle Daddy off her back, and revenge for herself and her brother. The only people who didn’t end this episode in bliss was Jen and Bryce.
Desna and crew bond through strife and happiness. Jen must deal with her husband breaking under the Uncle Daddy’s pressure. Oh, and Virginia is going to get everyone killed with her antics but what’s new?
What’s new in Claws Season 1 Episode 4? Well this time, Desna’s also making decisions that can get everyone shot in the chest like the Titus employee. The fall-out from said Titus incident lead to Jen’s husband having a mental break and desperately searching for a scapegoat. Then there’s Polly, who slid right back into old habits and got slapped right back into the gutter. The motley crew has been trying to get their lives together and sadly failing.
On the next episode of Claws, Somehow Desna and crew save Kenneth as Desna cooks up a plan to pin Roller’s murder on her old, evil foster parents. The whole fiasco looks like its behind Desna and Virginia, until the audience gets a peak into a new wild twist.
Claws season 1 episode 5, “Bats**t,” promises non-stop action as the girls figure out a way to save each other and themselves. The crew saves Kenneth from dying for a crime she and Virginia know he didn’t commit. Desna gets revenge on her foster parents for destroying her and her brother’s childhood. Jen continues to mend her husband’s mind from the disgusting things he’s had to do, and Polly gets violent at the thought of Virginia messing with her Desna. These women have huge trials on their hands and the stakes are getting higher and higher.
Desna and Virginia make mistake after mistake as Uncle Daddy begins his suspicions of who killed his coveted son. His anger begins to seethe and it becomes clear that he won’t rest until someone is going to pay for what happened to Roller.
The Claws Season 1 Episode 2 title gains clarity as the episode goes on. This funeral is not simply for Roller, but it spells the funeral to Desna and Virginia too if they can’t get it together. In Desna’s defense, she’s dealing with a lot in her own life right now and compounded on to that problem is now having to deal with two adults with the mental capacity of children: sweet Dean and stupid Virginia. Uncle Daddy is not playing around, which no one assumed he would be. However, with Desna and Virginia messing up at every turn, it looks like they’ll be found out sooner rather than later.
Desna and her salon crew must now deal with the repercussions of killing Roller. Uncle Daddy is on a single-minded mission to find whoever killed Roller and make them pay.
The promo for Claws Season 1 Episode 2 shows that time is not on Desna’s side. Quickly after she and Virginia hide Roller’s body on the boat and burn it, Uncle Daddy is hot on their trail. However, as with all organized crime – it is not just Desna and Virginia who will have to pay the price for their actions. Polly, Quiet Ann, and Jen will have to take the harassment from Uncle Daddy until he has enough evidence to close in on Desna.
After Roller and Uncle Daddy didn’t give Desna the money she was promised before joining their drug operation, Desna makes a fateful decision that will surely have lasting consequences for her and her crew.
Welcome to the jungle of organized crime ladies and gentlemen. Claws Season 1 Episode 1 did not disappoint in introducing the audience to a new and wild world of drug trafficking. Polly came back to the nail salon in a less than desirable situation, Desna finally sees Roller’s true colors, and young Virginia, after experiencing the dark side of being a gangster’s girlfriend, joins Desna’s long-standing nail crew. Through wit, humor, and steady pacing, Claws makes an amazing debut into network television.
Desna, a successful salon owner, tries to balance her love life, her company, her mentally ill twin brother, and her money laundering business, while the Dixie Mafia and other competitors use whatever methods necessary to try to keep her down.
The TNT dramedy Claws, created by executive producer Rashida Jones, promises to be the new angst-ridden summer drama we’ve all been waiting for. The diverse cast of Niecy Nash (Desna), Jason Antoon (Dr. Ken Brickman), Jack Kesy (Roller), Jenn Lyon (Jen), Dean Norris (Uncle Daddy), Carrie Preston (Polly), Judy Reyes (Quiet Ann), and Karrueche Tran (Virginia), listed on the IMDb website, show more than a knack for comedic timing in the previews and short clips that seems to perfectly balance the high stakes of money laundering and mafia business. I can’t wait to see these women navigate the world of organized crime.
